Reseller CallOut- funkyshique

1:36 PM Tuesday, September 22, 2009

funkyshique is selling the hugely popular figurines by Demdaco. The figures have stickers on the bottom that say "Made in China". (I know because I own some)

They are sold in every gift shop in the world it seems, did she think no one would notice?

  1. What the heck?! My friend has a huge collection of those. I always buy them for her and I would know them anywhere. Flaggy flaggy!

  2. Arg. I own those, and that one in particular.

:( So sad to find out Etsy is a big yard sale. Love this blog, hate that this blog is necessary.

  3. Those are called willow something or others. I know because my step-mom collects their faceless angels, and I bought her one just now when I was down there on my Kentucky vacation I just blogged about.

  4. The seller even says that this one has a date of 2000 on it.

  5. This shop sells a fair number of brand new knick-knacks, listed in handmade categories, as vintage or as supplies. Has a fair number of sales, has been open for years. Also sells altered vintage (maybe, maybe not) as 'vintage', and has had at least one of these things on the front page (and it sold).

If she really makes all the stuff claimed by her to be 'handmade with love' she has an impressive range of skills. So, why sell the stuff obviously not made by her?

I can't believe she's never been flagged. Like, flagged a bumch of times.

  6. I buy those for my Nana :)

    at the Hallmark store .

  7. Those are designed by my former Fiber professor in college, Susan Lordi...this is just sad...resellers do not belong on Etsy!

  8. Im often impressed by the sheer audacity!
    i too recognize these figures.

  9. So sick of these people who think it's ok to list anything and everything. I sometimes sell crap too- on ebay where it belongs. And did you guys see the "BIG $5 SALE" listing in her shop? That's not allowed.

  10. This shop is on the Etsy front page right now. Some of the things they sell are listed as supplies and are allowable by Etsy - pretty masking tape, etc, - but lots of it needs serious flagging! http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=7083465 SUPER CUTE MP3 ipod Earphone Tidy Wrap Winder as "supplies" ???

Those look like they could be vintage items? But there is no bio, shop policies, all blank.

    Rain Likely

  13. it has a date of 2000 carved into it. wouldn't that be vintage by etsy standards??

    Anonymous

  14. Vintage on Etsy can be anything: new or old, handmade or reseller.

If you look at this seller's list of sold items, it's a perfect quick-and-dirty guide for How to Use the Word Vintage to Sell Your Stuff on Etsy. She has this down so well she called her other shop The Vintage Bag -- no, she doesn't sell vintage bags and purses!

  16. Etsy's standard is 20+ years.

    GernBlanston

  17. Gern, you're right of course: the Etsy TOU says vintage sold on the site must be 20 years old or older.

But this seller, for example, has listed handmade (well, embellished/assembled) items in the vintage category, but did not list the little figurine in the photo as vintage. She uses the word vintage as if it means 'cottage style' or 'shabby chic', regardless of age. She is either blissfully unaware of the Etsy standard for vintage listings, or she knows but doesn't give a rodent's posterior about it.

  18. I was referring to the post by Anon above...

    GernBlanston

  19. I assumed anon was using sarcasm. :)

    Lindsey

  20. I have this figurine sitting on my mantle as we speak....go "figure"

    Erin

  21. I thought Anon was using irony, too.

The listing is still there after 2 days. WTF?

How much time does Etsy need to make it go away? It's like they are not sure if it fits the criteria for Etsy handmade or not.

  23. Wow, Jill. You're really angry.

I'll take a guess -- did you see this blog as a referral in your Google Analytics? If so, you might want to read a few posts down; a referral does not mean a direct mention on the source site. If that were true, I'd be in a lot of Etsy Finds emails!

If you think it's 'sad' to expose resellers and fakers on Etsy, well. . .there really isn't much I can say about that.

    JK

  24. Jill, I just visited your blog and I have a clue for you: being female and having reproduced does not give anyone a blank check to disregard the rules on Etsy whenever they please. What kind of example do moms who try to get away with whatever they can until they are caught set for their children?

I don't think I've seen any negative comments about funkyshique's actual handmade items. The problem is with a lot of her listings where she plays fast-n-loose with calling items 'vintage' which are nothing of the kind.

I don't know if the owners of the 2 shops you mentioned have anything to do with Etsy Call Out. I checked their shops out on Etsy, and didn't see any rule bending or breaking there. Love love love the lucite candle holders BTW! You do realize that they are more than 20 years old, and are legit to list on Etsy?

    life-during-wartime

  25. For the record, I do not publish this blog and have nothing to do with its administration. I mearly read it from time to time.

Jill, I would suggest you be prepared to support those accusations with FACTS or remove the untruths post haste.

    ebb

  26. This absolutely CRACKS me up!!! 'you people' have nothing better to do with your time than 'critique' other peoples effort to make a living?? And what about the person who created this blog?? Which, by the way, Who the heck are you? I mean really, are you helping 'the world' by devoting an entire BLOG about the wrongful doings on etsy? Where are YOUR creations? If this blog is the extent of your creativity, then no wonder your not a seller on etsy! Its very plain, and has no life, like you! One more thing, I appreciate the publicity, because today alone, I have had 14 requests for my famous 'handmade' burlap banners! So "Thank you" from funkyshique♥♥♥!

    funkyshique

  27. Oh and Jill/fish, your blog clearly shows that you really have no clue as to what is allowed on etsy.

This really doesn't deserve any more of my time.

Best of luck to the parties involved.

  35. Maybe Jill thinks the 2 shops she called out are in violation because she doesn't 'get' the rules in the Etsy TOU? I'm sure she can read the rules (if she chooses to do so), but I'm not sure she would understand tham. Same for funky...and for most of the Etsy staff. As an example, did anyone see the Spice Girls Polaroid Camera on the (staff-selected, wasn't it?) FP this evening (EDT)? It was categorized as vintage, but it's not any older than 1996. And of course it sold.

  38. Haven't you dumbasses figured out that the owner of the blog wants you to do all the dirty work for her?

The same commentors talk in circles..you think that Etsy is slice of heaven but yet you get so pissy when Etsy doens't do what you want them to do. You cant even get along with all the name calling!

    This blog is a joke!

    Anonymous

  39. Wow...Jill's really gone off the deep end. Etsy is for "handmade, vintage (at least 20 years), and supplies"...not "stuff I have lying around the house". That would be ebay.

And you think Etsy doesn't know about this blog? LOL. Etsy doesn't own the interwebz.

FTW, before you say no one loves me and I can't sell anything...I've been on etsy 2+ years, have almost 400 sales, and am a SAHM with 2 boys. And I also don't understand what procreating has to do with understanding your flipping out, Jill, and supporting someone who is selling Willow Tree (which I love...IN THE HALLMARK STORE!) on Etsy.

    Crazy Cat Lady

  40. funkyshique

Please do the right thing and take down the love statue that you clearly state in the description as marked 2000.

The fact that you have left them up in your shop, tells me loads about your integrity.

    Righteous Rule Breakers Suck!

  41. I'd like to hear funkyshique and her friend address why they think it's ok to list things made in 2000. Without talking about anyone else or what anyone else has said, or done, or listed. Just address that one issue. Thanks.

    Anonymous

  42. Oh nevermind, I see....instead of taking down the item even though you know completely understand that it breaks the Etsy TOU, you've reworded the description to attack the people who called you out on it. Ok. Well then. You really know how to do the right thing. Okie dokie. Keep selling it, because it's an "expression of love". Wow. Very professional.

    Anonymous

  43. "Haven't you dumbasses figured out that the owner of the blog wants you to do all the dirty work for her?"

Only someone who is breaking the rules would ASSume that we are too dumb to understand how things work around here or that we are here involuntarily.

Only someone who is actively breaking the rules would consider this "dirty work."

Those of us who follow the rules and want Etsy to remain true to its stated purpose see things a whole hell of a lot differently.

I'm guess your feelings were hurt when you were called out?

    Boo fuckin' hoo.

  44. "ATTN etsy sellers! Unfortunately, there is a blog out there called "etsycallout.blogspot.com. This blog was created just to spread bad things about etsy sellers. This blog was created by a woman who obviously has no life what-so-ever, and "lives" to tell the public about people here on etsy who 'wrongfully list' items with intentions of selling item on a 'resale' basis. To clear this up, Im not a person who collects things such as this. I didnt know that it was sold as a collectors item at Hallmark. I bought this from an estatesale, simply because it depics 'love', which is what we all need more of, instead of these old woman who think they 'got somethin' by starting a BLOG such as this 'etsycallout.blogspot.com' to spread terrible things about etsy sellers and their items for sale, and people who try to make a living in this bad economy. They should be more concerned with things like the economy, saving our planet, and most importantly, our kids future. Not who's doing wrong on etsy! I have not ever claimed this item to be handmade by me, nor have I said it's vintage! The purpose of this beautiful statue is to spread love and to be reminded of it, not to spread hate like the maker of this blog chooses to do. I don't understand why people feel the need to be so hateful!"

I'm sure she'll be thinking about LOVE and THE PLANET and OUR CHILDREN when she spends the money.

Is it wrong to laugh at stupid, clueless people? I hope not.

  46. Those of us who follow the rules and want Etsy to remain true to its stated purpose see things a whole hell of a lot differently.

Well, bedazled dumb fuck, I certainly dont see your shops's name up here and you hide behind that stupid annon name which shows how righteous you are.

Either you are the owner of this blog who is also hiding by not showing her name or too stupid to realize that you are being used.

Why is the owner of this blog not showing her name? Why do the "followers" just sit by and never question anything she says?

Stupid is,as Stupid does, I guess.

    Anonymous

  47. Ironic that "anonymous" is bitching about people not posting with a name, lol.

Cool that the item is gone now though.

    Crazy Cat Lady

  48. "Either you are the owner of this blog who is also hiding by not showing her name or too stupid to realize that you are being used."

Oh man, this is a toughie. Only two choices?

I'm sorry but I will need more options before we can proceed to the discovery phase.

    Bedazzled Condom

  49. Wow... Well, my name is in Fortune Small Business and I think Jill, Anonymous POS and Funky are dumbfucks if they've not figured out how Etsy works. You see, they don't police the site. They expect everyone else to do their work for them. At least these fine Etsians know the rules and follow them, unlike you.

    The Sneaky One

  50. Hey clueless, I don't know who officially runs this blog and it doesn't really matter. This blog is visited by lots of buyers and sellers who are sick and tired of resellers and sellers who disobey the rules on Etsy. And many of the call outs here are sent in by the posters to the blog, not just made by the blog "owner".

And I'm not a bitter old lady with nothing better to do. I have two successful shops on Etsy and I am sick of seeing mass produced, non vintage shit all over etsy, including the front page. So when I have spare time I check this blog and do a little flagging.

Oh and funkyshique's ranting in her listing just makes her look like a lunatic and is drawing attention to the fact that she knows she's breaking a rule and doesn't give a shit.

    Imwithya

  51. Jill - I'd be happy to post with my shop name, but seeing as how you're an an illiterate fool, I think I'll just let the voices in your head keep inventing wacky conspiracy theories.

    you gotta be kidding

  52. Hey crazy cat person, I am posting anon to play the game! You know baby, the game where we tattled on each other and act like kids.

Love your name, it fit you well. Just keep thinking that you are smart and sell those ugly beads of yours.

Imwithya...where is your store infomation at? Hmm, hiding are we? If you are so sucessful then let it out girl...I mean you dont break any rules do you????

LMAO that no ones knows wh owns this blog....just stupid folowers! You may think that you are right but you are wrong.

  53. Sneaky, then why be apart of something that is so tainted? You are to good for Etsy...better run off now....

Cmon, the great people of Etsy police....show your true colors and let it hang out. No takers? Keep hiding because you know that you have crap in your shop that might of broken a rule? Just a little...

No one cares who owns this blog and why her name is not revealed? YOu people cant run your own hateful blogs? Just as I thought!

    Anonymous

  54. Anonymous/Jill/Funkyshique/whoever you are- I keep myself anon here to protect myself from retaliating nutjobs.

And I wouldn't want to start a hateful blog. I never said anything hateful about funkyshique's handmade items. In fact, like her banners- I think they're charming. I am pretty sure I saw those glitter skulls at Tuesday Morning but hers have a flower glued on and that's allowed under Etsy's rules so I didn't say anything about those.

She just needs to take down her non-handmade/non-vintage item/s and her fake listing advertising a $5 sale which are NOT ALLOWED. But instead of saying "oops I didn't know those were against the rules, I'll take them down" she left them up and added crazy ranting to her listing that makes her look really unprofessional.

    Imwithya

  55. "You may think that you are right but you are wrong."

    ___

Wrong for pointing out items that are against Etsy's policies so that they can be flagged, which is what Etsy tells users to do for shops that violate the TOU? Oh yeah, totally wrong.

I must have missed the paragraph in the rules about turning a blind eye to mass produced shit. Unless Etsy's leading by example, they're pretty good at doing just that.

Jill posted items on her blog that don't break a single rule, except in her own delusional little head. And you're surprised people don't want a nutjob like that scouring their shop for imaginary rule breaking? Gimme a fuckin' break.

    you gotta be kidding

  56. ROFLMAO! I do have my own Blog, its called EtsyBitch. I am not anon, you just have to do your homework.

I stay on Etsy because I don't put all of my eggs in one basket, and I can obviously follow their rules. I also like a lot of the people there. They also follow the rules.

    The Sneaky One

  57. Anonymous/Jill/Funkyshique/whoever you are- I keep myself anon here to protect myself from retaliating nutjobs.
    ________
    oh yeah.

and funky--thank you for removing your willow tree item, but you now need to remove the listing that is an advertisement. It's not allowed! --even if you are a SAHM-that is a shit poor excuse for shitty behavior.

    forum rubbernecker

  58. I just need to say this clearly, for those who don't see what everyone else already realises -

The reason we do it anonymously is exactly because of the retaliation that can happen from people like Jill.

    sb

  59. I love the banners in Funkyshique's shop but I'll never buy anything from her after seeing that figurine. Also, that "LOVE" tin sign isn't handmade or vintage either ( http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=30079355). There's a local shop here that sells them...I think Hobby Lobby has them as well. The Audrey Hepburn pillow is a copyright violation, and I don't think you painted that birdhouse or that welcome sign.

Funkyshique, it's really too bad because those banners are absolutely adorable and I bet you lost several sales because of those other obviously not handmade items in your shop.

    Jill - Nevermind.

    Nobody Understands My Pain Either

  60. MIND*YOUR*OWN*BUSINESS!!! Who cares what she does? Why do you care? How old are you hags anyway? Your acting Like children! I don't care what she sells! I bought a banner from her, I liked them, so I bought one. I wasn't interested in the other things she had for sale. But I found her because of you cackling idiots! She has great feed back, and really cute banners. Leave her alone! She has done nothing to YOU! Ya bunch of blabber mouth waistoids! Get a fucking LIFE!

  61. i have to comment, i shop on etsy fanatically, for everything from clothes, to shampoo.

i consider myself an ethical shopper. i like to know where my products are coming from as best as i can. i avoid products made in factories made overseas (due to sweatshop, and child labor) i avoid big box retailers like the plague, and prefer to keep my money in the hand of small businesses, and even those sahms.

that being said, etsy is the perfect place for someone like me to shop.

i like being able to go onto etsy and be able to shop freely, and being able to feel good about my purchases.

i appreciate the efforts of people behind, and readers of this blog because i don't want to have to wade through pages of factory (and perhaps unethically) produced stuff while searching. i would feel pretty crummy if i bought something that the seller claimed was vintage, or handmade only to find out it was neither. i could guarantee that i would never come back to that shop.

i'm not hiding. i'm right here. i'm linked to my own blog. so no, not hiding. i have also had my own shop on etsy, so i am completely aware of the tou.

thank you etsy call out, and it's readers i check your blog everyday. because of you, i know what shops to avoid. you help me spend my money wisely, and ethically.

i have said it before. if you are a re-seller, there are plenty of other online venues you can utilize. if you are selling vintage pieces, it is up to you to research them. as a seller, people are trusting you to tell them the truth.

    -krista

  62. Yes, dear etsy plouce supporter, if you are rich, and have nothing better to do besides SHOP, then yes, I can see where your opinion would matter, and I'm not in anyway saying she's right for selling or "reselling" as you call it, for a couple items, no big deal. But if she were a store like that "wonder bar" then I can see your point. I was just browsing funkyshique and her sold items and she sells handmade stuff, made by her. Unfortunetly, I wasn't able to see the statue you were referring to, but what's the big deal? Lime she said, she didn't say she made or say it was vintage. But I liked her banners and something that "petty" wouldn't stop me from buying one. They are very unique and smart.

  63. oh and to answer some of you who are speculating about who reads this blog, and flags items.

    i'm 28...so i don't think that qualifies me as a hag yet.

i do create, everyday...if you click on my name you will see that.

i am not a hateful person...in fact i care about people so much, that i take the time out of my day to avoid products that may have been produced in a way that could be harmful to those producing them, and/or its store employees.

i have my own blog...where i link to etsy a lot. i promote it as a way to shop ethically, and would be mortified if one of my few readers logged onto etsy only to find mass-produced stuff.

the really sad part about all this...i really love that handmade canvas bunting. i would really like to buy some, cause i'm sick of making my own :) but i wont because the seller feels no responsibility to their customers by researching some of the items in her shop.

as a seller, you have to take responsibility by researching "vintage" items. which is why i never started a vintage shop. :) when responsibility is not taken, it show to me that your customer is really not valued by you.

i don't feel valued by a shop who (by refusing to research it's items) dupes it's customers.

just like the forums, customers read this blog too, and jill your attitude is a turn off. perhaps (besides fear of retaliation) there is another reason people post anon...they don't want to turn off their customers, but want to speak out on this blog.

**words from an etsy buyer with money to burn**

**these are the words of a buyer perhaps you should listen to them**

  64. nope anon, i do have lots of things to do. :) i have tons of hobbies but enjoy internet breaks when i'm sick of sewing. :)

i am a waitress who makes a comfortable. i take my money straight to etsy instead of the mall or wal-mart or target.

besides that mass-produced stuff, i love her shop! it looks great, and want some of that bunting for myself. but see my post above for why i wouldn't buy it. :)

oh boy if i was rich...i wouldn't do a thing but shop :)

Anon, thanks for the comment on my name. I know it fits me well, that's why I've been using it for almost 10 years on various websites. FTR, I am 39. Looking forward to turning 40 next year!

Also, I have a tip anon..."your" is possessive, "you're" is the contraction of "you are". So "your acting like children" should be "you're acting like children". It makes you look ignorant to make a second grade grammar mistake. Perhaps you should spend less time here and more time with an English 101 text. And what is a "plouce supporter" and what does "lime she said" mean?

It is important to protect the integrity of Etsy since their own admin doesn't do it.

I'm 34. Am I a hag? I've been thinking of buying some firming cream. Maybe somone on Etsy has some Olay listed that I can buy, right Funky? Cause who cares, right?

And when someone lists some mass manufactured banners that are selling for the a 1/3 of your price..let's see how much you care then.

    Laura

  83. And I've been reading this blog for what, a month or two and I think bedazzled condom is one of the coolest chicks ever! I always enjoy reading her posts.

I'm feeling protective of this blog! LOL! Maybe I do need more of a life?

    Laura

  84. Come on, let's not stoop to finding photos of people and "revealing" things about them. Be better than that. That's not what this blog is about. So funkyshique and her friend are big fat babies....fine. Leave it at that. No need to retaliate. Funkyshique has revealed herself to be what she is, right here in these comments, and there is no need to go any further than what's already been said. She got caught, and instead of a quick "oops, forgot I couldn't sell this, will take it down", she retaliated in a completely unprofessional way. Now we know. Those of you that just cannot live one more day without those unbelievably amazing burlap banners will continue to buy them, and the rest of us will add her to our 'do not buy from' list. Life will go on.

Again to repeat what someone else has said, the people posting here calling others out have done nothing wrong. We're actually trying to improve the quality on Etsy, and the reason we call out here is because we get muted in the forums for it. And calling out here WORKS! It's those that are listing the non-vintage and non-handmade items who are being deceitful. Funny, that. And most of us have to post here anonymously because the McCRAZIES who get caught, and their Crazytown resident friends, retaliate against US. Even though all we're doing is catching them.

    THAT IS WHY WE'RE ANONYMOUS.

    toonces

  85. "No need to retaliate."

No one said anything about retaliation.

By posting some easily available information, I am merely demonstrating to Funky/Amanda that she is not as invisible as she believes herself to be when she shits all over this blog as "Anonymous."

(And what I posted was nothing compared to what I found, believe you me.)

If she continues to shit all over this blog, I will continue to out her. If she stops, I will stop.

What do you say, Amanda? Are you done shitting now? Can we get on with more important things now?

    Bedazzled Condom

  86. Wow! You are Digging deep! Yes, I'm out ya'll! I've been 'found'! It's me! The lovely funkyshique! All I was doing is defending myself as each and every one of you would do if someone did this to you. But guess what, you've won! I give up! Now you can all pat yourselves on the back! I've removed everything in my shop except for my banners. I'm so sorry that most of you don't see what's going on with etsy. You all act like I'm a reseller and do this often, but I don't! I did list an item that wasn't vintage, but I did not say it was vintage. Nor did I say that I made the thing. I think you guys shouldn't be attacking and harrassing anyone, because it's not up to you to decide who sells what on their etsy store. But in my case, I may have added some fuel to the fire and I apilogise for that. I have been harrassed on my etsy store thru email, and it's very unprofessional of you all to do that. Especially when I keep to myself and don't bother anyone. I have made alot if great friends on etsy, as well as slot of repeat customers. I had that statue up since september 12th, up until a couple days ago, no one said a word about it. I honestly didn't know of the item I was selling, and your right, I should have researched it. I'm a romantic, so I was blinded by the love expressed in this figurine. I wish we could all be that loving, but it's very hard when there are people and blogs out there such as this. Do you think if I were standing face to face with each one of you individually, you would have the heart to say such mean things about a person you don't even know? Would you have said all these nasty things if it were the day after 9/11? I would hope not. And lastly, put yourself in my shoes. Are you telling me that each and every one of you have never broken any rules, ever? And if and when you did (I know you did) did you have your name, your myspace, your store, and your face exploited out all over the Internet for everyone to see, and make fun of you? Well, it doesn't feel very good. I feel like I was treated Like some sort of petifile or something. It was s NIC-NAC people! I'm not at all worried about this hurting my business, because aside from selling a nic-nac, I'd say I've done pretty well for myself with banner sales and other things I've made. I really love etsy, and I love my funkyshique store. So now you all can give yourselves a big pat on the back, or put another notch in your belt, because I took the figurine off, not because you said to do so, nor etsy said to do so, but simply because obviously you guys won't stop getting off on this whole subject until I removed it. And one last thing, a sharpie has never come anywhere near these eyebrows! But that was a funny one! Made me laugh, and believe me, I needed that today. So thank you.

    Funkyshique

  87. Sometimes it's best to just leave it at "I'm sorry."

An apology combined with wild accusations, nasty commentary and ridiculous attempts at guilt trips really doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot.

    Bedazzled Condom

  88. "I took the figurine off, not because you said to do so, nor etsy said to do so, but simply because obviously you guys won't stop getting off on this whole subject until I removed it."

So, basically, you still have no qualms about breaking the Etsy rules you agreed to abide by, you just don't want anyone to notice?

Be sure to seat yourself in the "Clueless Hags" section, Amanda.

    Bedazzled Condom

  89. ya know what?? I relize now that no matter what I say will be the right thing....so what ever! This is coming from the person who said my eyebrows have been drawn on with a sharpie. excuse me, but do you knwo me? Have you seen me in person to know that I draw on my eyebrows with a sharpie?? no. I tried, Ive said my apologies, I have removed the item from my store, and guess what???? Its not enough for you! So carry on, laughing at my expense, making yourselves feel so much better! Because after all, its people like you that need to put down others to feel 'extra good about herself'

Ya'll take care! It was fun and interesting! ;O)

    funkyshique

  90. "Because after all, its people like you that need to put down others to feel 'extra good about herself'" (FunkyShique)

I think the sword cuts both ways.

I really feel sad because it seems like an honest mistake and misunderstanding of Etsy TOUs. And the shop has been updated to only sell cute handmade banners now.

The only reason I wouldn't buy from her? Her unprofessional response here.

  98. Blogging about Etsy Call Out will only bring more attention to the violators. Too bad she doesn't see that.

Funky still has violations in her shop. She needs to understand that embellishing a vintage item makes it handmade, and it shouldn't be listed in the vintage category. A vintage item is something not altered in any way from the original design and original materials. If you add your own special touch to someone else's design and original materials, be proud and own your work -- and please sell it as handmade.

But don't fret, now that I've been inspired by Jill's brilliant new blog I may have to take Amanda's screechy advice and start one of my own.

I think I'll call it "Anti-Funkyshique Blog" or "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Amanda and Her Multiple Personalities But Were Afraid To ask."

Speaking of the new blog, everybody listen up! Jill has figured out why we expect others to follow the same rules that we follow.

It's all because we don't want to "share Etsy space with fellow Etsy lovers."

I'm so ashamed of myself. I had no idea that this was my motivation. I thought my motivation was a desire for Etsy to stay true to its intentions and not turn into a website full of MIC crap like Ebay.

Turns out I'm just a jealous bitch who want to drive all the other sellers out of town.

    I may never recover. *sob*

Again - your burlap banners are lovely, the not vintage/not handmade items not so much. Not everyone who has commented on this blog has been mean, rude or spiteful to you. Some of us have actually been very nice, offering gentle suggestions on how you could comply with Etsy's terms of use and possibly even make more sales in the process.

You might want to remember that before you start flinging hateful insults at every person commenting here - your words are defining you and you're not looking very pretty.

There is a huge problem with people trying to sell things that are better suited for Ebay on Etsy and rather than digging in, why not admit you fucked up WITHOUT the 9/11 guilt wahwahs and excuses?

  117. As a buyer, and someone who frequents a few Etsy-related blogs to make sure the stuff I might be buying isn't reseller crap, I am quite surprised at the utter meltdown in full force here.

This is almost as unprofessional as a seller using their business Twitter to call another seller a miserable snatch. You know, because your potential customers should know you have no issue being a dumb bitch while offering discounts and advertising upcoming sales. They taught this in my last marketing class.

    Wait. No they didn't.

Instead of a simple "My bad", and maybe venting a bit about being "called out" for a rules violation (politely as possible, of course), the quick descent to seventh grade began.

Being "called out" does not mean that there are legions of "old hags" ready to laugh at you. Take it as the lesson it is. That you violated the rules and are better for knowing them now. Even if you didn't mean it, a simple "Thanks guys for being on top of it and holding me accountable" would have won you over.

As it is, the people who frequent this blog, or even google your business name, will find a juvenile mess. That is your legacy here.

I might have bought a banner. But I won't. Not because you transgressed and neglected to pay attention to the rules, but because you acted like a petulant child instead of a business woman.

I don't care if you are selling multi-million dollar homes, or holding bi-monthly weekly garage sales, you are running a business and should always be aware that anything you say will reflect on your business.

There are some excellent marketing and public relations classes to be had at many community colleges across North America. I highly suggest investing in one, and learning from this fiasco.

    Angel

  118. Dear Amanda,

I'm going to leave these final comments and then I'll be done with this particular once riveting, now quite ridiculous comment thread.

I have not once throughout this entire process insulted you or called you a name. I have pointed out that you have lovely handmade items and I have also pointed out that you some very questionable items. No name calling. No insults. No picking you apart.

For the record, I also posted on here under "Nobody Understands My Pain Either." (I have a bad habit of submitting my comment before typing in my name.) You'll notice I did not insult you under that name, either.

Should my shop ever find its way on to this blog, I will address the concerns posted. I will either prove that the information here is wrong or I will adddress and fix the issues that need to be fixed. Although Etsy is a little bit slow when it comes to enforcing their own rules, I have a great love for the community and try to abide by the rules out of respect for them. I will not however, open my shop up to your scrutiny, simply because at this moment your behavior seems to be more than a little irrational. It would be a bit like telling the local crazy person where my house is.

As far as you stooping to my level...read back on all of your own comments. Then read mine. You would not be stooping - you would be reaching.

    Best of luck to you.

  120. You know, if you had just taken the advice of some well-meaning fellow sellers, you could have avoided all of this. But your ego go the best of you.

One two occasions, I've had fellow sellers whom I respect give their opinions about an item. After carefully doing my own research, I pulled the items because I came clear to me they didn't meet the TOU.

Do you know why I did this? Because integrity is important to me and my customers value my integrity. I am not interested in drama or being right.

I am interested in the integrity of the etsy site, as its a reflection of ALL OF US who use it as a venue to sell our items. And when another seller is clearly violating the TOU and compromising that integrity, I care.

I agree with the others...you banners are so cute and its such a shame to dilute them with TOU violations.

I truly do wish you the best. This kind of anxiety does no one any good.

  152. Seven Steps to Anger Control

    by T.L. Wentz, Ph.D

(Excerpt from Anderson and Elder, 2008. T.Wentz, PhD. (Ed.) The Practice of Control: Executive Coaching/Anger Management for Physicians. Anderson and Anderson, Brentwood, CA)

    1. Identify Your Feelings.

Start with your upsetting feelings. Identify those feelings. Use your recognition of those feelings as a STOP Sign! Upset feelings are a sign or signal that your self-talk (internal dialogue) is escalating your upset feelings.

    2. Identify Your Thoughts.

Identify your upsetting thoughts or internal dialogue that are contributing to your anger about the situation or person. Question yourself and ask…

1.) “Why must I get my way?”

2.) “Why should others do what I want?”

3.) How would you answer those questions?

    3. Reframe Your Thoughts.

Counteract your upsetting/angry thoughts with a positive self-message. Put the brakes on your feelings. You no longer have to react to your first impulse. Tell yourself, “Slow down, easy does it.”

    4. Clarify the Situation.

Take the time to clarify the situation for yourself. Ask yourself, “What is really going in this situation?” Then, you may acknowledge feeling disappointed or hurt by the person or with the situation. Being enraged is self-defeating and no longer an option.

    5. Set Realistic Goals.

Ask yourself, “What alternative solution(s) can I use to resolve this situation?” Set more realistic goals for yourself in regard to the problem. Be specific and concrete. What can you do to change the situation?

    6. Develop Options.

List the constructive options you have in order to reach your goals. Ask yourself, “What constructive actions can I take to reach my goals?”

    7. Take Positive Action.

Choose a constructive option to reach your goal and act on it. The end result of the ABCD process is positive action on your part!

Let's get back to doing the right thing and letting Etsy know that these shop owners are violators.

  155. Bedazzled, you have gone way too far on this. Yes, I broke a HUGE etsy law (obviously "THE etsy law") I admitted to the fact I was not a collector, I should have done my research, honestly, I didnt know what the thing was. It has no "made in china" stickers on it like you said, the only thing I saw was a carving on the side that said someones name, and 2000. Thats it! The thing lagitimately LOOKED like it was handmade! I also loved the fact that it was all about love. LOVE Bedazzled, something you have no sense of what-so-ever. So yes, my bad! I didnt say I made the whole friggin line of these willow tree things, I also didnt say "I" made it. AND I didnt say it was vintage! I did make a mistake, by putting it on etsy! (You'd think I had just made a terrorist attack on Washington D.C.!) I wasnt trying to be 'sneaky' about it, also like you said. Quote: Did she acually think anyone would notice??" um, get a clue, EVERYONE sees it! I wasnt trying to be sneaky! 'Dumbfuck'!

Next: You have absolutely NO RIGHT to xploit me like you have, including my blog, myspace and whatever kind of dirt you can condure up! That is FLAT out uncool! I have not spoke ANYTHING on this blog since last night, and I have been using 'fakey-shit' not anon, not monkeyshit, not anything. I am not hiding anything. You all know my store, you all now know my first and last name, you all know where I live, my sons name, the hubbys name, what else do you want? You want my bra size too? So YOU are wrong! Although you assume Im a terrible lying alcoholic crazy bitch mom, you have no idea who I am, or most importantly, "WHO" I know, so I suggest you keep MY personal business out of this, because like I said, you have NO IDEA what connections and resourses may lie at my finger tips. Enough is enough! Im deeply sorry if I offended any of you, it was very unprofessional of me, yes, but like the rest of you, I was caught up in the moment. From this, I believe that anything and everything on my etsy store will be all handmade by me, or atleast 20 years of age. I 100% understand the point of this blog, however, its hitious, hateful and plain out PROVES the kind of person you truely are, very discusting! If your going to have a blog, website, call-out or what ever it is, you need to atleast make yourself known to the people YOU are judging! Because you think you have it all, by finding my blog, and myspace, blah blah blah, but what you dont know, is how much I know about you! But to keep myself on my new 'professional level' I will not reveal, even though you SO deserve it. So please, MOVE ON!

    funkyshique

  156. The reality of doing business is that you lose your ability to remain anonymous. When you give interviews, for example, or when you join social networking sites, those are all outlets for people to "discover" who you are and what you do.

When I put the term Funkyshique into Google, there are loads of resources that all give insights into who you are as a person. Which is what careful potential buyers look into when they want to make sure the seller is above the board (and I think that we both can agree that on Etsy, we should be safe rather than sorry).

If you do not want to have your potential customers finding your personal information on the internet, I would highly suggest that you refrain from using the same handle, Funkyshique, for both business and personal matters. By using the same handle, it indicates that anything you say personally is automatically associated with your business. Your MySpace page shows up on the first page of Google, and if it is not intended to be an extension of your business, you should be changing it immediately. That is flat out basic business.

It is very unfortunate that this has turned into a circus act, Amanda. It is a very large guide on "What Not To Do". A seller, especially in the face of adversity, has to display a level of professionalism that is beyond reproach. Unfavourable comments regarding your store and its contents do not have to be reflections upon yourself, the individual.

The rather ugly truth is that whether or not you were posting under various anonymous monikers is irrelevant. Be they friends, former buyers, family, random people cruising in to cause more trouble, they all did more damage to your brand, Funkyshique, than the dozen or so posts prior to the arrival of the calvary entering the fray. It is very difficult to maintain a level of discourse when the people who are advocating civility are told to "drop dead" in return by people associated with yourself.

The problem with Etsy is that there are no employees who "police" the site, and the listings. They actually demand that the people who sell/buy do it for them (which ensures that they don't get pulled into situations like these). But they have created an impossible situation in that they actively thwart "calling out", an ambiguous far-reaching term which is an overused excuse to close forum threads without actually solving problems.

This dialogue could have been much different. It should have been much different. I really do suggest a helpful marketing course, or a public relations class, to learn to be able to deal with professional criticism (and rise against personal criticism). And next time, and hopefully there isn't a next time, let your pals know that you would prefer to deal with situations as the businesswoman you should be.

I won't be purchasing from you in the future, that is just the reality of coming in contact with a potential buyer and making a terrible professional impression, but perhaps your actions and deeds from this point further will help others overcome the lack of professionalism and nonsense displayed.

    Best of luck.

  159. Angel, ahhhhh...my 'angel in discuise', alot of this is probably true, I did not think about the consequences of this blog, but, I would have been 'called out' anyway! These acusations are not who I am as a person, or a business woman. I have been on alot of blogs, websites and such, pointing out what a charming person/busines woman I am. Perhaps I do need a business class, but who doesnt? I also believe that rude nasty people like this shouldnt xploit people just for their own entertainment. Yes, I did 'resell' but my God, I have to defend myself and my store! I did not commit a huge crime as everyone acts like I did! There are a ton of sllers on etsy that do this! Thats the point of this useless blog, isnt it? The "blog master" has mistaken me for someone else in alot of these comments, unfortunetly. I thought they could tell it wasnt me, simply by my poor spelling.

Im not a coward, and I have many many resources and have been doing my OWN homework, as well as talking to a person, luckily who is very close to me, that is assisting me. I did admit my mistake, apologised for it, even said that I would never do it again! But its not enough for these people, and they NEED to control the meaness!ESPECIALLY when it involves my personal life! Like I said before, you guys dont know me, or WHo I know!

Im not worried about losing business at all, especially your business Ms. Angel! I never invited you to come shop at funkyshique! I can see your 'doing research' if you were buying vintage diamonds, and antique furniture from The Biltmore, but its etsy. Its crafts, handmade pillows, supplies, some vintage clothes, come on! I guess that means that you are a serious tightwad, who has to do research (and have a coupon in hand!) for every item she buys! You butted your nose into this whole mudslinging event, so this is what you will find here, classless, nosey, cackling women who are bitter because they cant sell their handmade items, so they simply have to pick on the ones who sell the 'so called' yardsale trash! I make sales everyday, and I have alot of friends at etsy, amungst other places. And Im sure this isnt 'the end' for the blog master, as they are obviously obsessed with funkyshique.

It is sad that this 'unprofessional' side of me has been displayed, but this whole blog is a display of unprofessionalism, dont you think?

  165. Uhhhh, dazed condom (nothing bedazzled about you), my name IS Sarah and I am not pretending to be someone else. It seems to me you think there is this huge conspiracy theory when anyone who doesn't agree with you post on this forum it must be Funkyshique in disguise.

Let me clarify what I meant when I stated "get a life." What I should have said is that there are real world issues affecting all of us. Death, sickness, money issues, relationships, family, business and so on. "Grown up" people deal with these issues in a "grown up" manner. They articulate what they intend to say in a responsible and polite manner. They don't threaten, slander, make assumptions or speak in a rude manner that is unbecoming. Maybe what I should have said instead of "get a life" is that you should use your life, your life experiences and do some good in the world. Have some support for your fellow human beings, show kindness and if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all.

This post went from a basic calling out thread (which I happen to have no problem with) to turning into a huge train wreck on all sides. People from both sides of the issue have made this into a personal attack when really its a simple business issue that easily could have been resolved. Perhaps instead of taking it personally, as both sides have done so, they ought to remember that there really are bigger issues at hand in this world we call Etsy.

I would like to comment back to you, Amanda, regarding your post to me. I truly believe that you feel as though you need to protect yourself and your store. It's admirable and anyone who says they wouldn't is a liar. But there are many ways to accomplish that goal, and in hindsight, I think we both can agree that the way it was handled was not the optimal choice.

"I have been on alot of blogs, websites and such, pointing out what a charming person/busines woman I am."

I did some quick reading and I will agree with that statement. The interviews you have given, or blogs where you have been featured previously, have all been positive. Your business was being featured positively, you came across well, and I'd bet money on your shop getting a few more sales as a result. That is great public relations. You take the time to display your products well, your handmade signs and banners are charming, and there is a built-in crowd that loves it all.

I will assume that this is the first time that your shop (not you, you need to be able to differentiate that) came under a bit of scrutiny, and not the good kind. The reaction does not need to be gone into because people can read it for themselves, but the appropriate response is not this, if I might borrow from your words to me:

"Im not worried about losing business at all, especially your business Ms. Angel! I never invited you to come shop at funkyshique! I can see your 'doing research' if you were buying vintage diamonds, and antique furniture from The Biltmore, but its etsy. Its crafts, handmade pillows, supplies, some vintage clothes, come on! I guess that means that you are a serious tightwad, who has to do research (and have a coupon in hand!) for every item she buys!"

I would actually like to point out that a large number of shops carry items that are worth hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. I value handmade goods, both practical and art, and have no problem spending money for quality (and I do, much to the chagrin of my husband). That said... it does not matter if it something is $5 or it is $500, money is money and it (unfortunately) makes the world go round. The same reasons I do not shop at Wal-Mart are the same reasons I check into sellers I intend to purchase from. I've been burned before on Etsy, and I've learned from it. Had I just typed the name of the shop into google, I would have discovered the person I was about to purchase something from was a fraud.

A more business-like (and downright civil) appropriate response to me might have been something along the lines of "The situation was new to me and I reacted terribly, and I can completely understand your reluctance to purchase from my shop. I will strive to regain the respect of my potential customers and hope that in time you might re-evaluate your opinion of my business."

Calling me a tightwad and insulting me after I was attempting to help you does nothing but make a situation worse. Insinuating that you wouldn't want my business anyway, or implying that your level of goods aren't up to inspection-worthy quality, are both grave business no-no's.

There is truth behind the notion that if a customer has a good experience with a retailer, they will tell a few friends, and if they have a bad experience, they will tell dozens more. I may not be a potential customer anymore, but you need to understand that there are those who might be. A cheap personal shot can be disaster professionally! No business can afford to do that. None.

Be the businesswoman now, Amanda. React only with professionalism or not at all, and let's bring these posts to a more civil end.

    Angel

  177. Angel, I agree with you wholeheartly. But the fact that Amanda was "called out" was very unprofessional, won't you agree?

    Anonymous

  178. In response to Anon @7:18PM.

I don't feel as though "calling out" a seller is unprofessional. I do see it as a necessary evil. Let me explain.

The website, Etsy.com, does not have employees devoted to monitor the items that sellers put up. It relies on buyers/sellers to "flag" an item. Enough flags, it gets looked at. And often it is overlooked and some items (like that horrible Chanel purse knock-off) stay around for months and months.

But Etsy.com has this vague notion of what it means to "call someone out", the very term reminds me of junior high. They won't intervene into disputes (content or otherwise) unless prodded, and the official Etsy line is usually "work it out yourselves" and the ambivalence is seen as official approval to continue to disregard the rules. Websites like these encourage people to gather and "flag" things en masse, to ensure that there are enough "flags" for Etsy to do something about it and perhaps take things a bit more serious than they are normally prone to do.

Using and maintaining this website is, in my opinion, one of the best methods to actually carry out what Etsy.com tasks its users with, self-policing. I haven't seen much outright hostility in a lot of the threads, just a lot of "Yeesh, I can't believe X has been up that long" or "Yep, that's definitely wholesale". The two threads are among the handful that have degenerated into a mess of ridiculousness, and at this point it comes down to the behaviour of each individual poster.

Being "called out" is not necessarily a bad thing, although it is all in the delivery and subsequent responses. It can/should be taken as a group of people slapping someone on the wrist and making sure they are held accountable to the TOUs.

Did they break the rules? Yes? Then something should be done, which is that the readers all get together and flag an item and then move on to the next offender. No? Then the readers will discover it themselves, as they tend to hunt down wholesale websites to prove/disprove any item that comes up, and then move on to the next offender.

I think the only thing "unprofessional" about the whole thing is the reactions contained within both blog threads.

    Angel

  179. I agree with everything you said about Etsy and the frustration with the flagging not being taken seriously.

This is the part that I disagree with and I quote you:

"It can/should be taken as a group of people slapping someone on the wrist and making sure they are held accountable to the TOUs."

How can you expect a person take this lightly? Even if they are blatantly reselling? They are going to be mad as hell. Now take a seller that is selling an item that they aren't sure of, should they be outed too? And what kind of manner should this "call out" be?

From what I have seen here is rude behavior even though the intention is to make Etsy a better place. The comments alone tell me what kind people are here. There is no exuse for making fun of someone/something or purposely cutting them down.

    Thank you for the explanation.

You still don't get it. Etsy doesn't allow reselling items ON ETSY.
    Funky broke that rule.
Etsy doesn't allow calling out ON ETSY FORUMS.
This blog doesn't break that rule. Because this is not the Etsy forums.

If you listed your reseller stuff or your copied birdhouses on ebay, you'd be bound by ebay's rules, not Etsy's rules.
Each website's rules only apply to that domain, not to the whole internet.

  181. In response to Anon @ 8:06 PM:

I can completely empathize with sellers being mad, and I suspect that there is more at work than simple anger. Embarrassment and shame would be topping my list were I to find my shop listed on here. It is the reaction that matters (and it is the very thing you highlighted). The reaction does not come built into the blog, it comes from people who comment on it, and it is important to remember that the comments are not limited to the frequent readers (like myself) but also the ancillary readers that come by as a result of any particular post.

The rules are extremely important to Etsy users, they are what are supposed to keep Etsy free of wholesalers and cheap knock-offs. And while I can completely understand how someone would be angry to find themselves singled out, while so many others continue to break the rules they themselves have been highlighted for, that is not an excuse for the reactions that are displayed here for anyone and everyone to read.

The sellers have to also understand that the frequent contributors/readers are also angry/annoyed/upset at seeing the same kind of violations, over and over, seemingly using the same loopholes. I would go so far as to say that this is the very motivation behind the owner of the blog.

Regarding an issue where a seller may not be sure if an item violates the rules...the onus is completely on the seller to discover it. By posting an item of dubious origins, sellers are accepting that they may be breaking the rules - this is not a very difficult leap in logic. If they get flagged for it, or called out (as it were) for it, it is still the same as knowingly posting it, although they have a built-in humility excuse.

"I'm very sorry, I wasn't entirely certain of it and I'm glad to know on which side of the rules this particular item lies."

Unfortunately, the very first personal insult I see in this particular comment thread is made by the seller (to be fair, I don't know the contents of the comments that have since been deleted by whomever posted them), setting the tone to go nowhere but down. There are a number of comments about breaking the rules, and the general disgust with said rule-breaking, but the tone was set very early on. By a comment.

I see vitriol from all parties regarding this issue, and it would be fair to say that no one is blameless when it comes to the level of discourse being what it is.

As an aside, I tend to try and be very clear (it is a result of my day job) and that tends to result in a wall of text. I appreciate the time spent simply reading it and continuing to engage in civil dialogue.
