Vintage Misuse- Deargoldenvintage
8:15 PM Thursday, July 9, 2009HOLY COW! Yesterday was a record for traffic- almost 2,000 visitors!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
reader comment:
SM New York-founded 2005; under Steve Madden Shoe Co.
Whomever bought these got swindled because they were $36.00 and you can get the same pair on ebay for $10. I asked the seller about them and she was very rude and I told her she is deceiving customers by NOT SHOWING THE LABELS of her vintage. She has a lot of non-vintage, but covers it very very well.

and here is the other pair, also SM New York which she promptly removed the label name so no one could research it.

You know, I can’t tell what’s worse. The sellers intentionally deceiving naive buyers or the idiots that cannot tell what the hell they are buying.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is nothing worse than a rude seller when they get called out. I think we should all send her convo's just to piss her off :) -eco "vintage meets modern" rings a little TOO TRUE.
UGH! It's not like she even just made a mistake! That's so intentional, and skeevy.

"and here is the other pair, also SM New York which she promptly removed the label name so no one could research it."
You mean she was showing the label in the listing and then removed the pic with the label in it?
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Those huaraches are not 20 years old.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Neither are these.

How old is the Steve Madden shoe company, anyway?
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Lauren, from Dear Golden here, and I would like to clear a few things up. First of all, I was never rude to anyone, it is important to me to not be that way as it serves no purpose. I actually thanked the person for pointing out the SM New York label, whereupon she responded to me rudely. It actually upset me quite a bit. I honestly make no attempt to dupe people.
The black pair of open toe flats are NOT SM New York. I did not leave the label off to deceive as when I listed the red pair I did not know SM New York was new (lest I would not have put them in the shop and openly listed the brand). I almost never shoot the insole of the shoe unless they are too large for me to model with my own feet & I have to shoot them off my feet.
I love selling and wearing vintage and I have been grateful to everyone who comes to my shop. It makes me sad that this venom is focused on my shop and that someone would actually say that I was rude, which is something I work to never be.
Thanks,
Lauren @ Dear Golden

There are quite a few things in your shop and your history that are not 20 years old.
Why are you listing anything when you are uncertain of the date?
You're not allowed to make guesses. You're supposed to know.
Show some respect for the rules and people will respect you.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
But darling, you left them up to be sold! And that they did!
I think THAT is pretty rude!
I've browsed Etsy for quite some time but only recently signed up to purchase. The vintage on Etsy is horrible. I just read that post about Vjones1 (?) What the eff is that! How does Etsy allow this to happen?
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Oh my eyes! Did anyone see this debacle?

There's no way that these are handmade by Etsy's definition. Mabye handmade by 100 people but not 1 or 2.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Hi. I can understand mistakes, really. But all you have to do is google the brand of those shoes, and you can easily see that they are not vintage! I would assume that a vintage seller would at least google the name on the shoe! And you are held to an especially higher standard in my opinon. You sell a lot of vintage here, and have a reputation to protect.
It just made me sad b/c you have a nice shop, but it really makes me question your goals. To be true to vintage, or make a buck?
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Lauren-that seller you listed is a joke. She'll never be successful on Etsy, and eventually she will be closed. You can not even compare yourself to that! You are one of the top sellers in Vintage, and thus...expected not to make those flagrant type of mistakes!
It's disheartening b/c it makes me question all of your items now!
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
maybe you should cut this seller some slack. even those who have been selling vintage for many years make mistakes and this person has admitted making a booboo.
having purchased and sold vintage for 25 years, mistakes can be made with eras and fabrics. especially in the fashion world where recreating vintage and retro styles has become an art form.
i'd much rather purchase an item from some one willing to admit a mistake than someone who is self righteous and nasty, over-priced and really what seems to be jealous of a successful seller.
someone with a good eye (and that comes from age & experience) can spot the recreation.vintage has always been a buyer beware market & not everyone is familiar with what is selling at the mall.
what seems to be selling on etsy is a good photo, a clean (or clear) aesthetic/point of view & consistent listing.
in good conscience, can browbeating be good for your own business?
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Buyer only here. If I were to get something that was listed as vintage just to find out it wasn't and you the seller knew all along it wasn't, you would be getting a negative from me. If you are going to be a vintage seller then you need to do your homework on your items and not list them until you do know exactly what you are selling.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
I agree with the post about mistakes. It CAN happen. But not when it's labeled as SM New York, and it's a company that started in 2005. One little google search.... That's what makes me think it's NOT an accident b/c any vintage seller would at least google the name. Of course, she did list the maker so maybe it was a true mistake. I don't know...
The person I feel sorry for is the girl who bought these shoes when they are $10 bucks on Ebay.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Ugh. I would return the buyer's money, for starters. Vintage sellers like this give the honest ones a bad name, sorry. They may be very nice, and apologetic, but if you're selling vintage you're supposed to KNOW that what you're selling is vintage, not just guess. IF YOU DON'T KNOW, DON'T SELL IT.
Things like this make all vintage sellers on Etsy suspect, and it's not fair.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
This is why I won't buy "vintage" from Etsy.
Too many sellers are digging thru their closets and running to thrift stores to resell things they know or just don't care enough to look up.
It maybe just a mistake but to me it seems just lazy.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
i agree returning the money would be a good policy. or offering to send another item or something. yes a google search would have been smart as well. go0d points and hopefully this seller will think about that.
vintage has always been a buyer beware market and always will be. a good vintage clothing store will have some newer items (they should always be way cheaper than vintage) if the style is classic and the imitation does the past era justice.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
i like some vintage sellers on etsy. there's one cheep vintage with some real cute stuff.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Ten bucks says Lauren @ Dear Golden and oh joy! have the same IP number.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Wait WHAT! A vintage store should list new items? OMG....
People will justify anything for a buck...
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
oh joy, are you a seller?
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
i'm a seller and a buyer and ancient! unlike the golden seller
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
oh joy! You said this in an earlier comment.
vintage has always been a buyer beware market and always will be. a good vintage clothing store will have some newer items (they should always be way cheaper than vintage) if the style is classic and the imitation does the past era justice.
You are aware that this is not allowed on etsy....
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
I think she meant a brick and mortar shop, not etsy.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
yes i was referring to brick and mortar shops, where i've worked, shopped and drooled over in the US and all over the world for probably longer than many of the vintage sellers on etsy have been on this good green earth.
many of them have good quality newer items that are retro or vintage inspired because, if you love vintage, it is all about the style.
why on earth if a poster is using reason or a balanced approach to a critique of seller issues would you assume they are in cahoots or the same person?obviously lots of people arent following etsy rules (schmules)as it is (that's why this site is here, right?). why beat someone up if it isnt a consistent pattern, over and over again.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
I agree with Oh Joy, and furthermore it seems like the commenters here should maybe find something more productive to do. Notwithstanding there are far more sellers on Etsy doing much more selling of non-vintage items, much more obvious non-vintage items I mean. This all seems very mean spirited...

you know bedazzled, if you were like the queen ruler of rules and cared about respect for the rules, and all rah rah rules and such you wouldnt be here ragging on everyone and all of the other posters, seeing as its against the etsy schmules which is a big rule bug up your ass obviously. i dont know about golden or marg and have been posting here a while and just care about the issues not attacking other people, but maybe those are the schmules here (if so you'd know my isp and would realize you are wrong) so whatever, have a great saturday and all

This is not Etsy.
The Etsy rules do not apply here.

I don't know. Bedazzled might make a fine queen ruler.

Comment #32 just cracked me up! I freakin love this place.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
@#27
I agree. Etsy doesn't seam to care that this stuff is made by a legion of sweatshop workers. I guess to them it's "technically handmade" so it's cool:(
What happened to my last post?
@#32 LOL!
Oh and vintage-style and "true vintage" are two different things. People need to check their tags...or stop lying.

Dude, you are pointing out the obvious resellers that will be taken down. It's the respectable vintage sellers we are talking about...including Golden.
And I've been in awesome vintage shops that DO have the occasional new item, but they are actually few and far between. If you have ever been into Flashbax in Wilimington, NC for example. OMG. TO DIE FOR. I saw maybe 5 new pieces? Clearly marked as such.
Marking your SM shoes as vintage simply because you didn't even google? No comparison.
And I meant the comment, "Are you high" was hysterical.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
The difference is that etsy has rules that apply to vintage sellers. Making a comparison to B&Ms is pretty irrelevant.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
I'm sad to say that Lauren @ Dear Golden is STILL listing non-vintage clothing and shoes in her shop.
Some people have no shame.
Some people have no self-respect.
Combine the two and you've got double the delusion.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
This is incorrect, there are no non-vintage items in my shop, I am perplexed as to why you are harassing my shop. Your mean spirited comments are hurtful.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
You are still hiding labels and with good reason. A quick search of the few you do list is enough to clarify the truth.
Pointing out the obvious does not constitute harassment.
"Your mean spirited comments are hurtful."
Well boo fucking hoo. Your flagrant disrespect for the Etsy vintage guidelines is hurtful.
And what the fuck kind of "spirit" should I show towards someone who is dishonest in her listings?
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Seems I have had enough of all this, you seem kinda crazy to me.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Yes, please just ignore reality and retreat to your little bubble world where it's okay to list anything as vintage as long as it looks the part.
I lived through the 80's. I remember which brands and which styles were available then. You may be able to bullshit the children who review listings at Etsy, but I am not fooled.
You're either ignorant or you are a liar. I'm not impressed by either.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Before you go around being the rule Nazi, perhaps you should KNOW the rules. 80s IS vintage on Etsy.
And if this really was your crusade, there are many many sellers on Etsy selling non-vintage things, I am not one of them. Just take a break, sarge.
EtsyCallOut September 15, 2009 at 1:43 PM
"80s IS vintage on Etsy."
lol! Duh.
Once again, YOU ARE STILL LISTING RECENTLY MADE ITEMS THAT ARE NOT FROM THE 80'S. THIS IS NOT ALLOWED.
Not the brightest bulb in the pack, are you?
