Another ‘Etsy calls this vintage, even though it’s not’ Sunday on the FP and the Dorque.

<a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=25220353">http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=25220353</a>

I didn’t think you could grab something a few years old at a yard sale or thrift shop, sell it with something else unrelated that may or may not be 20+ years old (can’t tell from the photos), and list the marriage as ‘vintage’? There’s no assemby of the items, it’s just collected unrelated stuff.
<a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=25220353">http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=25220353</a>

But then the Etsy staff doesn’t know any better. The staff continues to ignore so many items that are handmade and look kinda cool, or are really vintage, to promote copyrighted items and yard sale castoff stuff.

Oh, and the few people I know who have been into the real equestrian thing would gag at Etsy’s idea of ‘equestrian style’. I think Etsy is confusing costumes for comedy rodeo acts, or what people who just collect items related to a specific animal (the horse, in this case) buy, with ‘equestrian’. Doesn’t matter so much now. Read an article on MSN about fall fashion trends last week, and it said the equestrian thing is ovah.

  2. Vintage or not, they didn't notice it's a damn DISH RACK?

    EtsyCallOut

  3. haha,

Along with being a file holder check out what else it can be used for,
    as stated in the description.

  4. I wouldn't recommend a metal dish rack for vintage china. I had some metal plate stands I used sometimes for photography, and simply standing some china in there for a few minutes I managed to nick a few rims. And I am super careful because handling some of those plates is like handling real money. Metal racks are for contemporary fully vitrified china, melamine or metal dishes. Antiques dealers use specially made wood and plastic multi-dish folding display racks for doing shows or setting up at bricks and mortar antique malls.

A file organizer is a good alternate use for the rack in the photo, but it isn't old. I think metal racks became popular at the same time as stone countertops, sometime in the late 1990s.

  5. A whole new low! I didn't think it could happen. Disgusting.

  6. Not sure if you can tag this vintage since these are still sold. Life During Wartime is correct- metal racks were not popular until the late 1990s.

You can still grab one of these at the dollar store.

  7. so funny!

  8. I agree, it's not good for vintage china, but it's still a.....dish rack!

  9. But it's such a good deal! How often do you see a dish rack for $22?!?

  10. Vintage my foot! I bought one of those from Tesco about 5 years ago and have only just ditched it for a new plastic one because it was looking a bit manky.

  11. Umm, metal dish racks were around way back when my mom was a child and I remember her having one when I was a kid. But I doubt many lasted long enough to keep this long and they would definitely look their age.....

  12. I would order it JUST to get those amazing genuine vintage manila folders. What an amazing antique find!!

  13. One has to wonder what was used before metal dish racks?

    EtsyCallOut

  14. Sorry MadebyM. What I meant to say was the crome plated weren't around. What your mom had was probably a genuine metal one. It would have been thick and heavy as opposed to the crome, which is thinner spoked and much lighter, such as the one the seller has listed.

  16. And 36 people have marked it as a favorite...

  17. I've never seen an old metal (wire?) dish rack at an estate sale. I would guess they rusted even if they were factory painted, like many of the metal napkin holders and beverage caddies I've seen from the 50s and earlier. Aluminum wouldn't rust, but it can get crusty from hard water. I think I remember seeing metal wire dish racks in old catalogs and magazines, but there are none in any of my collector's guides showing 20th Century kitchenwares. But they don't show any of the rubber-coated or plastic ones, either.

  18. Out of curiosity, I just searched for vintage dish racks on Ebay and then Google. Found a real vintage metal rack on Ebay; seller noted a bit of rust. Don't know how old it was, but definitely Etsy-legal. But on Google you find links to sellers on Etsy with 'vintage' metal dish racks which are obviously newer than 1989. (Yes, there are more since the item in this post was featured in the Dorque!) This is the stuff I saw in the stores when I was buying the (plastic coated) one I have now...in 2000.

  19. Maybe Etsy should discontinue all "vintage" items , or maybe we could just be sure before bashing the seller.
    Hmmmm?

  20. we use paper plates :)

  21. That's an Ikea dish rack.

  22. Sue, what is it folks are not sure of here? The rack isn't vintage.

It's too late for Etsy to 'discontinue' vintage, and last I saw any plans to separate vintage from handmade are pretty much forgotten. Etsy promotes used newer items sold as vintage in the same way they promote reseller shops selling their inventory as handmade.

  23. This shit amazes me. This is why, when I comb my cats' hair and end up with many egg sized hairballs, my husband tells me to sell it on etsy...because you can sell anything on etsy and someone will buy it. It's all in the (and I use this term loosely) marketing.

  25. most of the vintage ones were made from a different kind of metal, right? i've never seen a vintage one like this, even from the 80s.

    EtsyCallOut

  26. Before the 80's?
Looks like I can't comment on this at all. :)

  27. i have one just like it, here, with my dishes displayed so prettily upon it, all shiny and twinkling with suds.
    it is new. mass produced.
